Directions for Applying Decals
Directons for Applying Decals
The following tools and supplies, available from your local hobby shop, will help you apply Pomroy Productions decals:
-
Small scissors
-
Hobby knife
-
Tweezers
Cotton swabs -
Decal setting solution
-
Decal softening solution
-
Paint brush
-
A straight pin
You will need a wide, shallow bowl of water to loosen the decal from the paper backing. I find disposable clear plastic bowls work best. You will also need a glass of water to rinse the paint brush.

To obtain the best results in applying Pomroy Productions decals, use this procedure:
-
Paint your model. The best results are obtained applying decals to a glossy surface. If the base paint of your model is flat, consider giving the model an overspray of gloss paint.

Carefully cut around the decal to remove it from the sheet. Cut away one decal at a time; one sneeze can effectively scatter small decals to the four winds!

-
Carefully trim the excess decal paper from the selected decal.
-
Using a paint brush, apply a coat of decal setting solution to the model in the area you are applying the decal. Rinse the brush when completed.

-
Immerse the decal in the bowl of water to remove it from the paper backing. Thirty seconds is generally enough time to loosen decals, but it is usually a good idea to take a little longer for long, thin decals.
Caution: Don’t leave decals in the water too long. You want decals to be loose (slipping) on the paper, not floating away in the water. Once the decal is floating in the water, it is very difficult to retrieve and place.
-
Using the tweezers, remove the decal and paper from the water. If the decal has been in the water long enough, it will easily slide around on the paper.
Note: Decals are very fragile, especially if they are long and thin. Be very careful removing these from the paper. -
Slide a small amount of the decal (a corner or the first 1/8th inch of a long strip) off of the decal paper.
-
Position the decal over the model, where you want it to be located, and carefully slide the decal off of the paper and onto the model.
-
If necessary, use the hobby knife to make final adjustments to the position.
-
Blot any excess decal setting solution, and carefully press the decal into place.
-
Using a paint brush, carefully apply a coat of decal softening solution to the model in the area you are applying the decal. Try not to move the decal when you are applying this solution. Rinse the brush when completed.
-
Allow the decal to dry. Do not touch the decal until it is dry! The decal softening solution will "snug" the decal over details on the model, giving it a "painted-on" look. However, when the decal is wet, it could very easily smear.
-
Repeat for each decal. If, after all decals have been applied, you notice air bubbles, or places where decals haven’t "snugged down" completely, carefully pierce the bubbles with a pin and apply and additional coating of softening solution.

-
When all decals have been applied, overspray the model one or more times with clear paint, either glossy or flat. When this paint dries, the edges of the decals will be invisible, giving your model a very professional finish. This will also allow your model to be handled without damaging the paint or decals.
